Menopause - everything you need to know

What is menopause?

Women are born with a limited amount of eggs that are stored in the ovaries. The ovaries produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which control menstruation and ovulation. Menopause occurs when the ovaries can no longer release eggs each month and menstruation stops.

Menopause is seen after the age of 50, and in some women it may be earlier or later. This may be due to medical intervention or hormonal imbalance. Natural menopause is not artificially induced and involves three stages - premenopause, menopause, postmenopause.

Symptoms

  • changes in menstruation - one of the most common symptoms. These changes may be expressed in skipping one or more months of your cycle or occurring more frequently;

  • hot flashes - appear habitually in the face, chest and neck and lead to reddening of the skin;

  • night sweats;

  • sleep problems - inability to fall asleep;

  • concentration problems;

  • hair thinning;

  • incessant headache;

  • palpitations;

  • weight gain;

  • joint pain and stiffness;

All these symptoms can be expressed differently and are not always present. Each organism is different and responds to changes in its own way.

Why does menopause occur?

One cause is primary ovarian failure - when the ovaries do not produce normal levels of reproductive hormones.

A natural decline in reproductive hormones is the second possible option. It occurs when the ovaries produce less estrogen and progesterone, the hormones responsible for menstruation.

With total hysterectomy, immediate menopause is caused. With it, it is possible that the symptoms mentioned above appear abruptly, since menopause is caused artificially.
